Gocycle GX Electric Scooter Review

Overview

The Gocycle GX is the epitome of urban electric scooters and it’s easy to see why. This fast-folding electric scooter not only flaunts a chic, cutting-edge design but also packs incredible practicality for the daily commuter. Released in 2019 and crowned Gocycle’s "Fast Folding" model, it doesn't fall short in terms of performance and convenience.

Design & Build

Gocycle's attention to design and engineering is palpable in the GX. Sporting a lightweight frame and a fully integrated system, the GX's aesthetics are both sophisticated and minimalist. The sleek mag wheels aren't just about good looks—they're practical, too, ensuring effortless maintenance and a balanced ride. What's more, the innovative side-mounted "PitStop" wheels play a crucial role in the scooter's exceptional handling abilities.

Performance

Acceleration & Speed

With a front hub motor, the GX is both zippy and powerful. The scooter accelerates smoothly and can reach its top speed of 20 mph quite swiftly, especially in higher assist modes. Gocycle's proprietary traction control ensures that the front wheel does not outpace the rear wheel, providing a stable and safe ride even when the scooter is on full throttle.

Shifting & Gearing

The GX features a Shimano Nexus 3-speed internally geared system encased within Gocycle’s Clean Drive. It's a simple yet effective setup that, coupled with the customizable pedal assist, means you rarely, if ever, feel the need for more gears. The shifting is smooth and intuitive, allowing the rider to maintain momentum effortlessly.

Handling

Despite its compact size and folding nature, the Gocycle GX provides a stable and reassuring handling experience. Its agility is a strong point, with the 20” tires offering a low center of gravity while the Cleandrive system upkeep contributes to a stable ride, even around tight corners. The light frame contributes to its nimbleness, making it an ideal companion in the city's hustle and bustle.

Comfort

The GX cleverly employs "Vrgonomics" for a comfortable riding posture, and the frame design accommodates riders of various heights without compromise. However, the handlebars aren't adjustable, which might be a slight inconvenience for exceptionally tall riders. The hydraulic disc brakes ensure a smooth stop, enhancing the overall comfort.

Portability

Folding and transporting the GX is a breeze. It folds down quickly, locks securely, and can be wheeled along using the seat as a handle. This feature, combined with the scooter’s relatively light weight, makes it ideal for intermodal travel where carrying and maneuvering are necessary.

Battery & Range

The GX's battery is cleverly concealed within the scooter's frame for both aesthetic appeal and balance. The range is quite substantial; you can expect up to 20-50 miles on a single charge, depending on various factors like riding mode and terrain. The battery is easily removable, allowing for convenient charging.

Unique Features

A unique feature of the GX is the GocycleConnect App which serves as the scooter's dashboard since the GX lacks a mounted display. This app allows riders to choose between different pedal-assist modes like City, Eco, and Custom, effectively tailoring the ride to their preferences.

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Sophisticated design with a natural and balanced ride feel.

  • Compact, easy to fold, and transport.

  • Features easy-to-maintain PitStop wheels.

  • Offers a smooth riding experience and impressive range.

  • Provides extensive customization through the GocycleConnect app.

Cons:

  • Smartphone required to access ride data.

  • Integrated lights and fenders are not standard and must be purchased separately.

Conclusion

For those on the hunt for a foldable, highly portable electric scooter, the Gocycle GX stands out as an exceptional option. Its design balances the line between performance and style, and the ease of use is unparalleled. The app’s functionality adds a modern touch, enabling riders to customize their scootering experience.

6-Month Ownership Update

After more than 6 months of using the Gocycle GX, my appreciation for its compact design and robust performance has only grown stronger. However, this period has also brought some nuances to light.

Positively, the GX remains a dependable ally in daily commutes with its excellent battery life and resilient construction proving their worth over time. The flexibility to customize the riding experience continuously appeals to tech-savvy users, and its usability in varied urban environments is unparalleled.

On the downside, the need for a smartphone to access the full features of the GocycleConnect app has sometimes been cumbersome, especially for users who prefer a more traditional, device-independent experience. Additionally, the limited adjustability of the handlebars occasionally presented challenges in finding a perfect riding posture, particularly for taller individuals.

Overall, the Gocycle GX continues to stand as a top performer in the world of compact electric scooters. While it may come with minor drawbacks, the overall quality, convenience, and innovation embedded in its design offer a compelling argument for any urban commuter in search of efficiency and style.
