GOTRAX Xr Ultra Electric Scooter Review

After spending a good deal of time with the GOTRAX Xr Ultra, I have to say that it's a compelling little machine that gives you quite a bit for its price bracket. In this review, I'll delve into my personal experience with it, covering everything from build quality and design to performance and battery life.

Build Quality and Design

At first glance, the GOTRAX Xr Ultra has an unassuming design, much like your standard electric scooter. But once you actually get your hands on it, its robust construction starts to shine through. The frame is made from high-quality aluminum, which feels both lightweight and durable. The folding mechanism is one of the most important aspects I tested, and thankfully, it feels secure and holds up well with daily use. You don't want any wobble on your ride, and the Xr Ultra locks into its unfolded position reassuringly.

Performance

Jumping on the Xr Ultra, I was quite impressed with the acceleration. The 300-watt motor is peppy enough to get you up to the max speed of 15.5 mph rather swiftly. It isn't the fastest scooter on the market, but for city commutes, it's right in the sweet spot.

One thing I appreciated was the consistency in speed, even on slight inclines. However, it's worth noting that on steeper hills, the motor did begin to struggle, which isn't uncommon with scooters at this power level.

Riding in urban environments, I found the 8.5-inch air-filled tires to absorb most of the shocks from rough roads or bumps. There's no dedicated suspension system, which could be a notable omission for riders accustomed to smoother rides offered by more expensive models.

Battery Life

GOTRAX claims a range of up to 16 miles on a single charge for the Xr Ultra, thanks to its LG battery. In practice, I found that number is a little optimistic, especially if you're frequently tackling hills or riding at max speed. Realistically, you can expect around 12-14 miles, which still isn't bad and quite sufficient for most daily commutes.

Features and Usability

I particularly liked the LED display which shows speed, battery life, and the gear you're in. Speaking of gears, there are two-speed settings, and switching between them is straightforward. The headlight and taillight are bright enough for nighttime visibility, but I'd recommend additional lights for larger city environments where there's a lot of traffic.

The electric brakes provided ample stopping power in my tests, though there's always a slight learning curve if you're transitioning from mechanical brakes. They're responsive and, most importantly, reliable.

Conclusion

The GOTRAX Xr Ultra offers a balance between affordability, quality, and performance. While it may not have the bells and whistles of high-end electric scooters, it's an excellent option for beginners or those who have light to moderate daily commutes.

Pros:

  • Solid build with quality materials.

  • Respectable top speed and good acceleration.

  • LED display with essential info at a glance.

  • Good range for its class.

Cons:

  • Performance on hills can be lackluster.

  • No suspension system.

  • Range may be overestimated for some riders.

Overall, if you're looking for a scooter that ticks all the right boxes for a casual rider without breaking the bank, the GOTRAX Xr Ultra is definitely worth considering. It's a robust, no-frills commuter scooter that gets the job done.

Update After 6+ Months of Use

Having used the GOTRAX Xr Ultra for over half a year now, I have a deeper insight into the long-term ownership experience. This scooter continues to impress with its reliability for daily commutes. Despite the heavy use, the aluminum frame and folding mechanism have held up exceptionally well, showing no signs of excess wear or instability.

Long-term Performance and Maintenance

The battery's performance has slightly diminished, which is expected with electric scooters. The maximum range is now closer to 10-12 miles under regular conditions, slightly down from when it was new. Regular maintenance, especially keeping air in the tires and periodic brake adjustments, has kept the scooter running efficiently.

Practicality in Different Weather Conditions

Riding the Xr Ultra in various weather conditions has revealed some challenges. The scooter's traction on wet surfaces is adequate but requires careful handling during rainy days. The lack of a comprehensive waterproof rating also means extra caution is needed in wet conditions to avoid any long-term damage.

Overall Satisfaction

Despite some declines in battery life and the extra care needed in adverse weather, the GOTRAX Xr Ultra remains a staple for my urban transportation needs. Its cost-effectiveness paired with dependable performance makes it a continued favorite, especially for those new to electric scooters or seeking a budget-friendly option.

Continuing to use the Xr Ultra has reinforced my initial impressions: it's an accessible, robust scooter great for getting around the city. Its limitations, while present, do not overshadow the excellent value it provides in the electric scooter market.
