Okai Neon Electric Scooter Review

Introduction

I recently had the opportunity to try out the Okai Neon electric scooter, and I'm eager to share my experiences. As someone who's ridden a variety of electric scooters, I find the Okai Neon to be a noteworthy option for those looking for a reliable urban commuting companion. From its sleek, modern design to its practical features, the Neon is certainly worth considering.

Assembly and First Impressions

Out of the box, the Okai Neon was relatively easy to set up. The folding mechanism felt sturdy and secure, giving me immediate confidence in its build quality. With a predominantly aluminum frame finished with subtle yet stylish neon accents, the scooter has a contemporary look that stands out without appearing overly flashy.

Performance

The Okai Neon promises a top speed of 15.5 mph (25 km/h), which I found to be quite accurate during my rides. The 350W brushless hub motor provided enough torque to get me up moderate inclines without too much struggle. I was particularly impressed with the scooter's acceleration which felt smooth and responsive to my throttle inputs.

What sets the Neon apart for me was its ride quality on various surfaces. Equipped with 9-inch pneumatic tires, the scooter managed to absorb many of the shocks from uneven pavements and light potholes. However, for a truly comfortable ride, I would've preferred a more advanced suspension system especially on rougher terrain.

Battery Life and Range

Okai claims a maximum range of up to 25 miles (40 km) depending on riding conditions, but in my experience, the range was a bit more conservative. Riding in a mixed setting of hills, flat terrain, and using varying speeds, I achieved around 18-20 miles on a single charge. Nevertheless, for short to medium-distance commutes, this should suffice for most users.

The charging time from a completely drained battery to full charge took about 4-5 hours, which is fairly standard. I appreciated the convenience of the charging port location and the LED display that keeps track of battery life was clear and easy to read even in sunlight.

Comfort and Handling

The deck of the Neon had ample space to stand on comfortably, even with larger-sized feet. I also valued the anti-slip surface which provided extra safety when riding in damp conditions. The handlebars were at an adequate height for my frame (I'm about 6ft tall), meaning no hunching over was necessary, leading to a more comfortable ride in terms of posture.

Handling was generally precise; the scooter responded well to subtle steering adjustments which made navigating through traffic and tight spaces quite effortless. The Neon also boasts a dual braking system, combining both electrical and disc brakes, resulting in reliable stopping power that felt both smooth and safe.

Design and Build

The integrated LED lights on the Okai Neon are both practical and aesthetically pleasing. With a bright headlight, taillight, and under-deck lighting, I felt visible to other road users during night-time rides. The IPX4 waterproof rating provided peace of mind for those occasional rides in the rain.

The build quality overall seemed robust, with no rattling or parts feeling flimsy. The folding mechanism made it easy to carry the scooter when needed, and it locked into place securely, both when folded and extended.

Unique Features

One feature that caught my attention was the built-in Bluetooth speaker. While it may not be a necessity, it added a fun element to cruising. I was able to play music from my phone, and the sound quality was decent, although I would not rely on it in noisy traffic for safety reasons.

Additionally, the Neon is equipped with a smart app that offers various functionalities including tracking your ride statistics, adjusting the lighting, and even locking the scooter for added security.

Conclusion

The Okai Neon electric scooter has proven itself as a solid option for those in the market for a reliable and stylish urban transport solution. Its combination of performance, comfort, and design, along with some unique features, make for an enjoyable riding experience.

While no scooter is without its drawbacks, the Neon's slightly lower-than-advertised range and lack of advanced suspension are minor compared to its strengths. Priced competitively for its segment, I would recommend it to daily commuters and leisure riders alike who are looking for a combination of style, performance, and practicality.

As with any electric scooter, I'd advise potential buyers to test it out if possible, to ensure the fit and feel are right for your personal needs and riding style. The Okai Neon is a solid contender in its class, and it was certainly a pleasure for me to review.

6-Month Ownership Update

After using the Okai Neon extensively for more than 6 months, I've accumulated some additional insights on its long-term performance and usability.

Positive Attributes

The Neon's durability has been commendable. It has held up well against daily wear and tear, retaining a good appearance and functional integrity despite frequent use. The battery performance has also been consistent, with only a slight decrease in maximum range, which is typical for lithium-ion batteries.

The convenience features like the quick-folding mechanism and the lightweight design have made the Neon incredibly practical for multi-modal commutes — easy to carry on public transportation or fit into a car trunk.

Areas for Improvement

However, some issues have cropped up during prolonged use. The lack of advanced suspension mentioned earlier has become more pronounced as I ventured onto varied terrain, making some rides noticeably rougher.

Additionally, while the braking system is generally reliable, the brake pads have worn down quicker than expected, necessitating replacements and adjustments sooner than anticipated.

Despite these drawbacks, the Okai Neon continues to be a robust and enjoyable ride for urban commuting and leisure. Its stylish design and range of features still stand out in the crowded market of electric scooters.
