Segway GT2 Electric Scooter Review

When it comes to top-tier electric scooters, the Segway GT2 stands out as a marvel of modern engineering. Having spent ample time zipping through urban landscapes and tackling varying terrains, I'm poised to share my comprehensive thoughts on this powerhouse of personal mobility.

Build Quality and Design

Upon first glance, the GT2 exudes a robust aura with its sleek, black finish and eye-catching golden accents. It's clear that Segway didn't skimp on materials; the frame is constructed from high-grade aluminum, which imparts durability without forfeiting style.

The design reflects a marriage between urban sophistication and rugged functionality. It folds with a satisfying click, though it's worth mentioning that the GT2's heft—at nearly 60 lbs (27 kg)—might deter some from frequent lifting.

Performance and Speed

Performance-wise, the GT2 is nothing short of a rocket on two wheels. Boasting dual 1500W motors, the scooter rockets up to 43.5 mph (70 km/h), a speed that demands respect and a solid helmet. The torque is immediate, catapulting you forward with a gentle press of the throttle—thrilling to adrenaline seekers, though potentially intimidating for novices.

The adjustable suspension system, encompassing double wishbone front suspension and rear trailing arms, absorbs shocks commendably, ensuring a ride as smooth as silk even on less forgiving terrains.

Range and Battery Life

The GT2's impressive 72V battery provides a range up to 56 miles (90 km) on a single charge under optimal conditions. In my experience, heavy use and greater speeds will diminish this figure, but the scooter still holds its own for extensive rides without the anxiety of a dying battery.

Charging time is fairly reasonable, given the range and battery capacity; a full charge requires approximately 6 to 8 hours, so overnight charging is the most practical approach.

Safety Features

Safety is paramount with a vehicle capable of such speeds, and here, the GT2 shines. The scooter is equipped with front and rear hydraulic disc brakes that are remarkably responsive, effectively bringing you to a stop from high velocities. Furthermore, an antilock braking system (ABS) helps prevent wheel lockup during sudden stops.

Lighting is also generous, with a powerful headlight, taillights, and side lights that increase visibility, an essential feature for those late evening rides.

User Comfort and Experience

Riding comfort is not overlooked. The spacious deck offers plenty of room for a secure stance, and the rubberized surface prevents slips. The handlebars are ergonomically designed—a testament to Segway's eye for detail—where every bell and whistle feels within intuitive reach.

Connectivity is the cherry on top. The GT2 syncs seamlessly with the Segway-Ninebot app, which unlocks customizations for lighting, riding modes, and even a lock feature for added security when parked in public spaces.

Potential Drawbacks

The Segway GT2 isn't without its caveats. First and foremost is the price tag, which positions it as a luxury item rather than an economical commuting choice. Also, the scooter's considerable weight and size might not appeal to those with limited storage space or who frequently need to carry their scooter.

Additionally, its formidable speed capabilities require responsible handling. This scooter isn't suitable for children or the faint of heart; it's a serious machine for seasoned riders.

Final Thoughts

The Segway GT2 is a triumph of electric scooter technology, setting a benchmark for performance and luxury. It's an ideal match for enthusiasts capable of handling and affording its exuberance. While not the quintessential "scooter for everyone," for the right user, the GT2 offers an exhilarating, reliable, and high-end experience.

For those who value the blend of speed, style, and sophisticated engineering, the Segway GT2 is a standout choice—assuming you're prepared for its vigorous performance and have proper safety gear. As with any powerful vehicle, respect and responsibility are key to enjoying the GT2's full potential.

Update After 6 Months of Ownership

After over six months of frequent riding, I’ve come to further appreciate the Segway GT2’s capabilities and also recognize a few areas where it could improve.

Positive Updates

  • Durability: The GT2 has proven itself incredibly sturdy. Despite frequent use, it shows minimal wear and tear, maintaining performance without any significant decline.

  • Battery Consistency: The battery life continues to impress, reliably delivering close to the expected range, even with regular use, affirming the scooter's suitability for longer trips.

  • Community and Support: The owner's community is active and supportive, offering troubleshooting advice and sharing experiences, which enhances the overall ownership experience.

Areas for Improvement

  • Weight and Portability: The weight of the scooter remains a challenge. It’s not the most portable option, which limits its usefulness for mixed-mode commuting (like using it alongside public transport).

  • Maintenance Access: While the GT2's build quality is high, accessing parts for regular maintenance or repairs can be cumbersome. A more modular design would help in this regard.

Overall, the Segway GT2 continues to be a top-performing scooter that offers thrilling speed and reliable commuting capabilities, though it's best suited for those who have space to store it and do not need to transport it frequently.
