SoFlow SO1 Electric Scooter Review

After extensive research and studying user experiences, I'm here to delve deep into the world of urban mobility with a thoughtful review on the SoFlow SO1 Electric Scooter. Combining practicality with a splash of fun, the SO1 touts itself as an entry-level model that doesn't skimp on the essentials.

Performance & Range

The SO1 is equipped with a modest 325W motor, which is fairly standard for an entry-level electric scooter. It offers a top speed of 20 km/h — gentle enough for beginners but also ample for a quick zip through the park. A standout feature is its range. On a full charge, SO1 promises to take you up to 12 km, which should cover your daily short commutes or leisurely rides with ease.

One must note, however, that actual range can be affected by various factors such as rider weight, terrain, and usage patterns. The maximum gradient of 5% might require a little more manual effort on steeper inclines, but it should fare well on gentle slopes.

Build Quality & Design

Weighing in at 11.2kg, this scooter doesn't feel overly cumbersome. Its foldable design aids in its portability, allowing you to stow it away under a desk or carry it on public transport without much hassle.

The frame seems sturdy enough to handle the rigors of daily use, and it can support riders up to 100kg. Adopting a black and green color palette, the SO1 appeals to those who prefer a more subdued look with just a hint of flair.

Comfort & Usability

Comfort is paramount when it comes to personal transport. The SO1 features 6.5" solid wheels. While solid tires eliminate concerns about punctures, they do tend to offer less cushioning compared to pneumatic alternatives. The ride quality is respectable on smooth surfaces, but you would feel the bumps on rougher roads.

Practicality is further displayed in the built-in kickstand and an intuitive handlebar display, indicating battery life, speed, Bluetooth connectivity, and light status. These features make the SO1 user-friendly, even for someone just dipping their toes into e-scooter waters.

Safety Features

Safety is a critical component of any electric scooter, and the SO1 has taken the necessary precautions. Electronic front brakes and a mechanical rear brake work in tandem to provide solid stopping power. Paired with a front and rear lighting system, the scooter ensures you're visible and can come to a safe stop when commuting in low light conditions.

Battery Life & Charging

The lithium-ion battery packed into the SO1 requires up to 5 hours for a full charge. This is average for the industry, meaning you can top it up during a standard workday or overnight to ensure it's ready to roll when you need it.

Smart Connectivity

With the companion SoFlow app, riders have the luxury to monitor their scooter's performance and settings right from their smartphone. Bluetooth connectivity further binds the personal device to the scooter, offering a more integrated riding experience.

Verdict

The SoFlow SO1 Electric Scooter is a balanced offering for those seeking an easy-to-use, entry-level e-scooter. It doesn't boast high-end specs that might overwhelm a new rider but instead focuses on reliable basics – moderate speed, decent range, essential safety features, and a convenient design.

For anyone weighing up options for a budget-friendly, practical electric scooter to navigate the urban terrain, the SO1 points toward being a worthwhile contender. It's a solid companion for daily short-haul trips, errand running, and those moments when you just want to ride out for some fresh air.

While it does have limitations, like the maximum gradient and the impact of solid tires on comfort, these are compromises often found at this price point.

Pros:

  • Lightweight and foldable design

  • Intuitive handlebar display

  • Solid build able to support up to 100kg

  • Adequate speed and range for city commutes

Cons:

  • 5% maximum gradient may struggle on steep inclines

  • Solid tires can result in a less comfortable ride on uneven terrain

  • 5-hour charging time may not suit all users

Final Rating: 3.5/5

Update After 6+ Months of Usage

Having used the SoFlow SO1 for more than six months, there are added insights worth sharing regarding long-term ownership.

Positive Attributes

Over the months, the SO1 continued to demonstrate its reliability for daily commuting. Its lightweight and foldable design remains a highlight, always convenient for mixed-mode commuting and storage. The overall durability has been commendable with no major wear and tear issues, which confirms its decent build quality for the price.

Negative Attributes

As time passes, some of the initial drawbacks have become more pronounced. The comfort over uneven surfaces hasn't improved and can make longer rides somewhat tiresome, mainly due to the solid tires which do not absorb shocks as well as pneumatic tires would. Battery performance has seen a slight decline, commonly seen in lithium-ion batteries. This degradation has slightly reduced the range, making careful power management a bit more crucial during extended trips.

Closing Thoughts

The SoFlow SO1 remains a good entry-point scooter, ideal for short daily commutes and quick errands. Despite its few downsides, such as decreased comfort on rough terrains and gradual battery efficiency reduction, its benefits in urban commuting contexts have mostly stood the test of time. For prospective buyers, these factors are worth considering, especially if primary usage involves smooth surfaces and short to moderate distances.

In light of long-term experience, the strengths and weaknesses of the SoFlow SO1 have held consistent, proving it a solid but not spectacular choice for casual users and first-time electric scooter buyers.
